The National Association of Multicultural Engineering Program Advocates

(NAMEPA) is a national network of educators, and representatives from

industry, government, and nonprofit organizations who share a common

commitment to improving the recruitment and retention of African

Americans, Hispanics, and American Indians earning degrees in

engineering.  As a recognized authority in minority engineering education,

NAMEPA serves as an advocate for those students, promotes the pro-

fessional development of members, and generally engages in a wide range

of activities which respond to the needs of its membership.

Since 1979, NAMEPA has served to increase the effectiveness of educators, corporations, government agencies and nonprofit organizations who work to increase the number of engineers from traditionally under-represented minority groups. We are committed to providing a comprehensive overview of the total minority engineering effort and the challenges inherent in developing a minority engineer.

In 1979, engineering degrees were awarded to 51,207 students. Of these, 2,249 students were African American, Hispanic, or American Indian.

In 1993, engineering degrees were awarded to 63,067 students, according to the Engineering Workforce Commission of the American Engineering Society. Of these, 4,681 students were African American, Hispanic, or American Indian.

In 2003 engineering degrees were awarded to 73,915 students, according to the Engineering Workforce Commission of the American Engineering Society. Of these, 7,353 students were African American, Hispanic, or American Indian.

Have we reached parity? No.   Have we made progress? Yes.

NAMEPA's main mission is:

·          to provide quality services, information, and tools for our stakeholder

·          to produce a diverse pool of engineers and scientists, and

·          achieve equity and parity in the nation's workforce
